What is ELA?
The acronym ELA stands for English Language Arts and is composed of the subjects (reading, spelling, literature, and composition) that aim at developing the student’s comprehension and capacity for use of written and oral language.
ELA Curriculum at YHALE
For the 2024-2025 school year, YHALE has adopted the Reading A to Z curriculum, grades K-5, and Amplify for grade 6th. Both curriculums highlight lessons developed with principles that include high quality, culturally relevant, and rigorous texts. The curriculum materials provide instructional opportunities (questions, tasks, and activities) that grow students’ knowledge of topics and themes while advancing literacy skills. Reading A to Z additionally provides cohesive and comprehensive instruction for early reading and writing development, while Amplify focuses on student comprehension to tackle many complex texts and make observations, while grappling with interesting ideas, and finding relevance for themselves.
All ELA lessons are directly aligned to Georgia’s Department of Education’s Georgia Standards of Excellence and Common Core Standards for grade 6th. For an overview of all ELA Standards K-5:

ELA Model at YHALE
YHALE uses a gradual release model during the ELA block which consists of: an introduction to the lesson, explicit instruction, guided practice, and subsequently independent practice. During the ‘24-’25 school year there will be heavy emphasis on guided reading and reading centers/stations. A literacy center is a physical area (or station) designated for specific learning purposes. It is designed to provide appropriate materials to help students work independently or collaboratively (with partners or in small groups) to meet literacy goals.
